Founder & Advanced Dive Educator

Shawn Dougherty
Advanced Dive Educator · Divemaster
With more than 1,000 dives across varied and demanding environments, Shawn Dougherty brings decades of practical experience to Scuba Dojo.
After stepping away from active in-water instruction, Shawn shifted the focus of the Dojo toward the part of diving that is often overlooked: what a diver knows, how they prepare and how they make decisions before, during and after a dive.
Today, Scuba Dojo provides private education and mentorship through Zoom and a structured learning portal. The work covers diving science, technical theory, safety, risk, human performance, nutrition, endurance and the regional environments explored through the Hydrographic Survey Series.
This is not certification training.
This is advanced dive education.
About the Dojo
Knowledge. Judgment. Preparation.
The Problem
Certifications give divers a foundation, but they cannot prepare someone for every environment, system or decision they may eventually face.
Over time, most divers build their knowledge in pieces—from courses, travel, equipment changes, incidents and personal habits. Experience helps, but it does not always expose the gaps.
The Difference
Scuba Dojo works with experienced divers who want to go beyond standard course material.
The work is private and focused. It is shaped around the diver’s background, goals and the environments they are preparing to enter.
Sessions take place through Zoom and are supported by portal study, case analysis and reference material.
The work may also center on a specific destination, marine region or volume within the Hydrographic Survey Series.
The Result
The goal is a better-prepared diver who understands more of what is happening, sees problems earlier and makes better decisions.
The objective is stronger judgment, more deliberate planning and a clearer ability to recognize developing risk before it becomes an emergency.
